Uredo cajani is the causal agent of pigeon pea rust (Cajanus cajan), a significant fungal disease affecting one of the most important legume crops in tropical and subtropical agriculture. This pathogen belongs to the rust fungi group, which typically parasitize living plant tissues, significantly impacting the physiology and development of the host plant.
The primary symptom of the infection is the appearance of small, powdery pustules known as uredinia, mostly on the underside of leaves. These pustules exhibit a distinct reddish-brown or orange color, characteristic of rust diseases. As the infection progresses, the pustules can spread to stems and pods, causing leaf chlorosis, necrosis, and premature defoliation of the crop.
