Devil's urn (Urnula craterium) is an ascomycete fungus recognizable by its distinctive, deep, cup-shaped, black fruit bodies. While primarily a saprotroph that plays a crucial role in decomposing woody debris on the forest floor, it can occasionally act as a opportunistic pathogen, colonizing weakened or damaged deciduous trees.
The fungus typically targets hardwood species such as oak, beech, and various maples. It shows a preference for trees that have been compromised by environmental stress, such as prolonged drought or severe winter conditions. Once established in the bark or sapwood, the fungus facilitates the degradation of wood fibers, which can compromise the structural integrity of branches or trunks.
Symptoms of the infection include the presence of black, leather-like apothecia on the bark, often occurring in clusters. Infected trees may display reduced foliage density, dieback of smaller branches, and localized bark lesions. In many cases, the outward symptoms are subtle, as the internal mycelial growth progresses slowly within the host's tissues over several seasons.
Development and spread of the fungus are highly dependent on moisture levels. High humidity and cool spring temperatures create the ideal environment for the release of spores from the cup-shaped fruit bodies. These spores are dispersed by wind and splashing rain, finding purchase in bark crevices, pruning wounds, or areas previously damaged by insects or abiotic factors.
