The fungus Urocystis sorosporioides is the primary pathogen responsible for the disease known as smut of umbellifers. It belongs to the Urocystidaceae family and acts as a systemic obligate parasite, primarily targeting various species within the Apiaceae family, causing severe physiological disturbances in the host plants.

This pathogen specifically infects plants such as Aconitum and various wild or cultivated umbellifers. Its ability to colonize the intercellular spaces of the host allows it to disrupt nutrient transport and metabolic processes, leading to systemic weakness and structural deformation of the affected vegetation.
