Description

The causative agent of pea rust is the fungus Uromyces apiosporus, a specialized parasite within the order Pucciniales. As an obligate biotroph, it requires living host tissue to complete its life cycle. It is known to infect various species of the Lathyrus genus, impacting both wild populations and cultivated legumes, leading to substantial physiological stress in the plants.

The primary hosts for this pathogen are members of the Lathyrus family, with the common vetchling (pea vine) being highly susceptible. The fungus typically colonizes stems, petioles, and the abaxial (lower) surfaces of leaves. By feeding on the plant's nutrient reserves, the fungus disrupts the host's normal metabolism, leading to chlorosis and subsequent necrosis of the infected tissues.

Symptoms begin as small, chlorotic spots that eventually erupt into characteristic rusty-brown uredinia. These pustules break through the epidermis, releasing massive quantities of urediniospores that spread via wind and rain splashes. As the host plant matures, the fungus shifts into the telial stage, producing dark-colored teliospores that survive through the winter period in soil or plant debris.

Environmental conditions play a decisive role in the spread of Uromyces apiosporus. The disease thrives under conditions of high humidity and moderate temperatures, typically between 18°C and 24°C. Excessive canopy density and poor air circulation in the field contribute to higher local humidity, which facilitates the rapid germination of spores and the subsequent infection of adjacent plants.

Effective management and prevention of this rust disease involve a multi-pronged approach. Crop rotation is essential to prevent the accumulation of inoculum in the soil. Furthermore, removing crop residues after harvest significantly reduces the number of spores available for the next season. When environmental forecasts predict conditions conducive to disease, preventive applications of systemic or contact fungicides are recommended to safeguard the yield.
