The disease is caused by the obligate fungal pathogen Uromyces azukicola, which belongs to the rust fungi family. This pathogen is highly specific to legumes, with a particular affinity for the azuki bean (Vigna angularis). It functions as a biotrophic parasite, extracting nutrients directly from the host tissues while inducing physiological stress that negatively impacts the crop's development.
