Uromyces dactylidis

Description

The causal agent of this disease is the rust fungus Uromyces dactylidis, an obligate parasite. It is a heteroecious fungus with a complex life cycle involving alternate hosts: the aecial stage develops on buttercups (Ranunculus spp.), while the uredinial and telial stages parasitize various species of forage grasses.

Orchard grass is the primary host, although the pathogen frequently infects other common grasses such as fescue, bluegrass, and bentgrass. The disease is a significant concern for both seed production and pasture management, as it directly impacts the biomass yield and nutritional value of the forage.

Symptoms initially appear as small, bright yellow-orange pustules known as uredinia on the leaf blades. As the infection progresses, these pustules multiply, covering large areas of the leaf surface, which causes premature chlorosis, necrosis, and leaf death. By the end of the season, dark brown to black telia form on the host tissue.

Disease development is highly dependent on environmental conditions, particularly high humidity, heavy dews, and moderate temperatures. Densely populated stands, which impede air circulation and retain moisture, are highly susceptible to rapid fungal colonization and spore dispersal by wind currents.

The economic impact of the disease includes reduced digestibility and energy content of the forage. Infected crops exhibit impaired photosynthesis, which leads to stunted growth and lower tiller production. Furthermore, the aesthetic and nutritional degradation of the grass reduces the overall quality of hay and pasture output.
