Geranium rust

Uromyces geranii is a specialized fungal pathogen responsible for the disease commonly known as geranium rust. It primarily targets plants within the Geraniaceae family, interfering with the plant's nutrient uptake and photosynthesis, which leads to stunted growth and reduced aesthetic value.

The primary hosts of this pathogen are various species of Geranium and Pelargonium. The disease is highly host-specific, meaning it thrives by colonizing the tissues of susceptible geranium varieties. If left unmanaged, the infection can spread rapidly throughout a garden or greenhouse collection.

The symptoms of geranium rust are typically observed on the leaves. Initially, small, pale-yellow spots appear on the upper surface. As the fungus matures, characteristic reddish-brown pustules, known as uredinia, develop on the undersides of the leaves. These pustules release masses of spores, which are the primary means of spreading the infection to healthy neighboring plants.

The development and spread of Uromyces geranii are heavily dependent on environmental factors, particularly high humidity and moderate temperatures ranging between 15°C and 22°C. Moisture on the leaf surface is essential for spore germination. Consequently, the disease is most prevalent during wet, humid weather or in environments with poor air circulation.

Effective management and prevention of geranium rust require a combination of cultural and chemical strategies:

• Ensure proper spacing between plants to improve airflow and reduce humidity around the foliage.
• Avoid overhead irrigation; water at the base of the plant to keep the leaves dry.
• Promptly remove and dispose of infected leaves or entire plants showing symptoms to stop the cycle of spore release.
• Implement a regular scouting program to detect early signs of rust.
• Apply appropriate fungicides, such as those containing copper or sulfur, as a preventive or curative measure when environmental conditions are conducive to infection.
