As an obligate biotroph, this fungus relies entirely on its host for nutrient acquisition throughout its complex life cycle, which may involve alternate host species to complete its development stages.

The primary hosts of this pathogen are various types of bulrushes and sedges. In agricultural landscapes, these plants often serve as reservoir hosts located in wetland areas or ditches adjacent to cultivated fields. While it is not a primary pest of staple grain crops, understanding its host range is crucial for preventing potential cross-contamination and managing overall field hygiene.

Symptoms of the disease are characterized by the appearance of systemic or localized uredinia on the leaves and stems of the host plants. These structures initially appear as small, elevated spots, which soon rupture the epidermis to release dusty, rusty-brown masses of spores. Severe infections result in significant chlorosis, reduced photosynthetic capacity, and ultimately the necrosis of the infected foliage.
