Lupin rust is caused by the pathogenic fungus Uromyces lupini, a specialized parasite that exclusively targets plants within the Lupinus genus. This fungus extracts essential nutrients from the host plant, resulting in significant physiological stress and hindering the plant's ability to produce healthy seeds or foliage.
This fungal disease primarily affects commercial lupin crops, potentially leading to widespread damage in agricultural fields. It is considered a significant threat in areas where lupins are grown extensively, as the rapid spread of the pathogen can lead to severe reductions in both seed yield and vegetative biomass.
