Sorrel rust is a fungal disease caused by Uromyces rumicis, a specialized obligate parasite belonging to the order Pucciniales. This pathogen specifically targets plants of the Rumex genus, commonly known as sorrel, affecting their foliage and overall vigor during the growing season.

The primary symptom of the infection is the appearance of pustules on the leaf surfaces. Initially, these appear as small yellow or orange spots, which eventually develop into powdery, rusty-brown clusters of urediniospores. These spores rupture the leaf epidermis, creating a characteristic rusted appearance that gives the disease its name.

The development of Uromyces rumicis is heavily favored by warm, humid conditions. Moisture from rain, irrigation, or heavy dew is essential for the germination of spores and their transmission between plants. The fungus typically overwinters on debris or persistent host tissues, making it a recurring issue in fields where sanitation is neglected.
