The fungus Uromyces savulescui is a specific plant pathogen belonging to the order Pucciniales. It primarily affects plants of the Limonium genus, commonly known as statice or sea lavender, which are widely grown for their ornamental value and use as dried flowers.

The disease cycle involves the formation of rust-colored pustules on the leaves and stems of the host plant. These pustules contain urediniospores and teliospores, which act as the reproductive structures of the fungus, allowing it to propagate and colonize new healthy tissues throughout the growing season.

Symptoms typically start as small, discolored spots that eventually erupt into reddish-brown or dark brown lesions. As the infection progresses, these lesions merge, leading to chlorosis, tissue necrosis, and significant curling of the leaves. Severely affected plants may show stunted growth and loss of floral quality.

The development of Uromyces savulescui is highly dependent on environmental conditions, particularly humidity and temperature. Optimal conditions include moderate temperatures (around 18–24°C) combined with high relative humidity or surface moisture on leaves. Such conditions favor spore germination and the infection process.

The economic impact of this disease is significant for flower producers. Rust infection renders the statice crop aesthetically unappealing, reducing its market value. Moreover, the pathogen weakens the plant's physiological integrity, which can lead to reduced flowering yield and potential plant death if left untreated.
