Usnea (lat. Usnea) is a genus of lichen often found on the bark of fruit and ornamental trees. While not a disease in the conventional sense caused by a pathogen, it is considered a sign of poor tree vitality and unfavorable environmental conditions in orchard management.

The organism acts as an epiphyte, attaching itself to the bark. However, excessive growth of Usnea can negatively impact the host plant by blocking lenticels, which are essential for gas exchange. This creates a moist, sheltered microclimate that often attracts insect pests and facilitates the spread of fungal spores.

The cultures most prone to this colonization are mature fruit trees such as apples, pears, and stone fruits. Usnea thrives in environments characterized by high humidity, poor light penetration, and inadequate airflow within the canopy, frequently appearing in orchards that lack regular maintenance.

The primary symptom is the appearance of gray-green, hair-like or shrubby growth hanging from the branches and trunk. If left unmanaged, the tree may show signs of overall decline, including sparse foliage, stunted growth, and a significant reduction in fruit yield due to physiological stress.

Control and prevention strategies focus on improving tree health. This includes mechanical removal of the lichen using soft scrapers during the dormant season and periodic pruning to enhance ventilation. Applying horticultural oils or lime-based washes to the trunk can also prevent the lichen from re-establishing.
