Description
The class Ustilaginomycetes (smut fungi) comprises a large group of basidiomycete fungi that are obligate parasites of higher plants. They cause a specific disease known as smut, during which the infected organs of the plant (ears, stems, leaves) turn into a black mass of spores resembling soot. During its life cycle, the fungus penetrates the host tissues, feeding on its nutrients and breaking down the cellular structure of the plant.
The main crops susceptible to these pathogens are cereals: wheat, barley, oats, corn, millet, sorghum, and various wild grasses. The disease affects both spike and panicle inflorescences, leading to a critical decrease in crop yield. The diversity of smut species is vast, and for each crop, there is a specialized pathogen adapted to specific phenological stages of the plant's development.
Symptoms of infection vary depending on the type of smut. With covered smut, the grains are replaced by spores covered with a membrane, whereas loose smut completely destroys the ear, turning it into a powdery black mass of spores. External signs often appear only during the flowering or ripening stage, which complicates early diagnosis. Infected plants may show stunted growth, stem deformation, and premature browning of tissues.
The development and rapid spread of the pathogen are facilitated by specific agro-climatic conditions. Infection often occurs during the germination of seeds in the soil or during the flowering stage, when spores are carried by wind or raindrops. Moderate air temperatures (from 15 to 25 degrees Celsius) and sufficient soil moisture in the first weeks after sowing create an ideal environment for spore germination and the penetration of infection into the seedling.
- Seed treatment with systemic fungicides.
- Strict adherence to crop rotation, excluding susceptible crops for 2-3 years.
- Utilization of resistant crop varieties and hybrids developed for high immunity.
- Optimizing sowing dates to allow plants to pass through vulnerable growth stages quickly.
- Thorough destruction of plant residues and deep plowing to bury infested plant debris.
The economic harm caused by smut fungi lies not only in the direct destruction of yield but also in the significant degradation of grain quality. Contamination with smut spores gives flour a foul odor and dark color, rendering the product unsuitable for food consumption. Large-scale epiphytotics without proper agro-technical protection can lead to losses ranging from 20 to 50 percent of the harvest in affected fields, posing a serious threat to farm profitability.
