Description
The causative agent of the disease is the fungus Ustilago affinis, a member of the smut fungi group. This pathogen is a highly specialized parasite that primarily targets wild and cultivated species of the foxtail genus (Setaria). It induces a systemic infection, transforming the host's floral structures into masses of dark fungal spores.
The primary hosts affected by this fungus are wild grasses such as green foxtail and yellow foxtail. While these are often categorized as weeds in agronomic contexts, their role as reservoirs for Ustilago affinis is significant. The infection spreads within these populations, potentially impacting the overall health and seed production of grasses in surrounding agro-ecosystems.
Symptoms of the disease become apparent during the heading stage. Instead of developing normal inflorescences, the affected plants produce stunted or deformed spikes filled with black, dusty teliospores.
