Pathogen and disease type. Stem smut, caused by the basidiomycetous fungus Ustilago hypodytes (often associated with Ustilago spegazzinii), is a systemic disease affecting various grass species. The pathogen colonizes the vascular tissues of the host plant, eventually replacing normal plant tissue with black, powdery teliospores. It is a specialized fungal disease that disrupts the physiological growth processes of cereals and wild grasses.

Host range. The fungus primarily infects a wide variety of perennial and annual grasses. Major cereal crops such as wheat, barley, and oats are susceptible to infection. Furthermore, wild grass species growing in or near agricultural lands act as crucial reservoirs for the pathogen, facilitating the spread of spores to commercial crop fields during favorable seasons.

Symptoms and signs. The most diagnostic symptom is the appearance of long, dark streaks of spores covering the stems, leaf sheaths, and internodes. Infected plants typically exhibit severe stunting, stem twisting, and malformation. The heads (spikes) are often poorly developed, sterile, or fail to emerge entirely because the pathogen diverts nutrients away from the reproductive organs to support its own spore production.

Conditions for development and economic impact. The development of stem smut is favored by cool and moderately moist conditions during the early growth stages of the plant. The fungus overwinters in the soil or within the rhizomes of perennial grasses. The economic impact is significant, as infected plants suffer from reduced biomass production, loss of grain yield, and lower forage quality, often rendering the crop unsuitable for harvest if the infestation level is high.

Protection and prevention measures. Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for controlling Ustilago hypodytes. Key strategies include:

  • Treatment of seeds with systemic fungicides to prevent early-stage infection.
  • Effective management and removal of grassy weeds in and around fields to eliminate inoculum sources.
  • Implementation of proper crop rotation to break the survival cycle of spores in the soil.
  • Deep plowing to bury infected plant debris, which reduces the amount of initial inoculum available for the next season.
