Description
Cameroon smut is a plant disease caused by the fungus Ustilago kamerunensis. This pathogen belongs to the smut fungi group, which specifically targets the reproductive structures of various grass species. The fungus functions as an obligate parasite, extracting nutrients from the host plant to facilitate its own spore production cycle.
The host range of this disease primarily includes various cereals and wild grasses found in tropical and subtropical climates. By invading the inflorescences, the fungus prevents the formation of healthy grains. The infection process is highly efficient, often resulting in the total replacement of the plant's reproductive organs with fungal biomass.
Visible symptoms manifest as the development of dark, sooty spore masses where the grains or spikelets should be. Initially, these masses are enclosed in thin membranes, but as the spores mature, the membranes rupture. This releases a cloud of teliospores that can be dispersed by wind, rain, or insects to infect neighboring plants.
Development and spread are heavily influenced by environmental conditions, particularly high humidity and moderate temperatures during the flowering stage of the host.
