As a specialized pathogen, it specifically targets grass species, causing significant physiological and structural changes within the host. The fungus acts as an obligate parasite, deriving all its nutrients from the host plant's tissues during its complex life cycle.
The host range of Ustilago mulfordiana primarily includes various grasses within the Poaceae family, most notably species of Festuca. The infection is typically systemic, meaning the fungus colonizes the plant internally. Once established, the mycelium grows upward through the stem, eventually occupying the developing inflorescences and disrupting normal reproductive functions.
The primary clinical symptom is the transformation of spikelets and floral structures into dark, powdery masses of teliospores. These spore-filled galls are initially covered by a thin membrane, which eventually ruptures to release spores into the environment.
