This pathogen is a specialized parasite that exclusively targets plants within the Scorzonera genus. It is classified as a smut disease, characterized by the replacement of the host plant's tissues with a mass of dark fungal spores.

Affected crops. The disease primarily affects Scorzonera hispanica, commonly known as black salsify or scorzonera. While it may not cause massive economic loss in every season, it can become a significant issue in fields where monoculture is practiced or where the pathogen has successfully established a reservoir in the soil from previous harvests.

Symptoms and signs of infection. Symptoms typically become visible during the reproductive phase. The infected flower heads (capitula) undergo severe deformity. Instead of producing fertile florets and seeds, the flower structure is filled with a black, powdery mass of spores. Over time, the outer tissues of the flower head disintegrate, allowing the wind to disseminate the spores over a wide area.

Conditions for development and spread. The fungus spreads primarily through infected seeds and soil-borne spores, which can remain viable in the ground for several years. Harmfulness and protection measures. The primary damage caused by Ustilago scorzonerae is the total loss of seed yield and the general decline in plant vigor. To minimize the impact of this disease, agriculturalists should adopt an integrated pest management approach:

  • Strict crop rotation schedules, avoiding the cultivation of Scorzonera in the same plot for at least 3-4 years.
  • Sourcing certified, disease-free seed stock.
  • Regular field scouting to identify and physically remove infected plants before spores are released.
  • Applying appropriate fungicide treatments if environmental conditions favor disease outbreaks.
