Stripe smut, caused by the fungus Ustilago striiformis, is a destructive systemic disease that primarily affects various grass species. Unlike other smut fungi that focus on reproductive structures, this pathogen colonizes the leaves and leaf sheaths, causing significant disruption to the plant's physiological processes.

Common hosts include major turfgrasses such as Kentucky bluegrass, creeping bentgrass, and various species of fescue and ryegrass. The disease is frequently observed in high-maintenance turf areas, golf courses, and pastures, where it can persist for several years if environmental conditions are favorable.

The characteristic symptoms begin as elongated, yellow-green streaks appearing parallel to the leaf veins. As the fungus develops, these streaks rupture the epidermis, releasing masses of black, powdery spores. This process causes the leaves to split, curl, and eventually wither, leading to a scorched appearance of the affected grass stand.

The development of Ustilago striiformis is highly dependent on environmental conditions, thriving during cool, moist weather, particularly in the spring and autumn. The spores can survive in the soil or within infected plant debris for extended periods, serving as primary inoculum for recurring infections in subsequent seasons.

The economic impact of the disease is significant, particularly in turf management, where it reduces the overall quality, density, and stress tolerance of the grass. Effective control strategies involve:

  • applying systemic fungicides to prevent infection in susceptible varieties;
