Description

Vacuiphoma is a fungal disease that affects various woody and shrub species, caused by the Vacuiphoma genus. This pathogen is a member of the Coelomycetes group, known for infecting the bark and cambial layers of host plants. The disease process is often insidious, as the fungus colonizes the internal tissues long before visible symptoms appear on the outer bark.

The primary hosts of this pathogen include ornamental shrubs and specific forest tree species. The fungus targets the plant's transport system, obstructing the flow of water and nutrients. Consequently, plants under stress or those with existing wounds are the most susceptible to primary infection, leading to localized tissue necrosis and severe structural damage.

Symptoms of Vacuiphoma infection typically manifest as sunken, discolored lesions on the stems or trunks. As the infection progresses, small, dark pycnidia emerge through the bark, which are diagnostic indicators of the disease. In advanced stages, the infected areas crack, leading to girdling of the branches, canopy dieback, and eventually the death of the entire plant if left untreated.

The development and spread of Vacuiphoma are significantly influenced by environmental conditions, particularly high humidity and prolonged moisture on plant surfaces. The spores are primarily dispersed by splashing water, rain, and insects. Proper air circulation and managing moisture levels are crucial, as stagnant air and damp conditions provide the perfect microclimate for the pathogen to thrive.
