Vacuolaria virescens is a unicellular organism classified within the Raphidophyceae group that acts as a pathogen in specific agricultural and aquatic environments. While often studied as a microalga, its presence in root zones can cause significant physiological stress to various plant species.

The pathogen primarily affects plants grown in hydroponic systems, greenhouses, and waterlogged soils. Its ability to colonize the rhizosphere interferes with nutrient uptake, often leading to systemic weakness and susceptibility to secondary microbial infections, which severely impacts plant health.

Typical symptoms include the formation of a greenish, slimy layer around the root system and near the root neck. Affected plants exhibit signs of chlorosis, reduced growth rate, and in severe cases, the death of the root system leading to the wilting of the entire plant structure.

The development of Vacuolaria virescens is favored by stagnant water, insufficient aeration, and moderate temperatures ranging from 18°C to 25°C. These conditions provide an optimal environment for the organism to multiply rapidly and colonize new root tissues, spreading easily via contaminated irrigation systems.

Key measures include maintaining high levels of dissolved oxygen in hydroponic solutions, ensuring efficient drainage in soil, and regularly disinfecting irrigation equipment to prevent the introduction and spread of the pathogen.

For chemical control, if cultural practices are insufficient, producers should focus on localized applications of fungicides or algaecides safe for the specific crop. Regular monitoring and early detection remain the most effective methods to prevent significant economic losses in both commercial and nursery production settings.
