These organisms act as highly specialized plant pathogens, targeting specific host tissues to complete their life cycle. Their primary biological strategy involves the formation of teliospores, which facilitate both the dissemination of the pathogen and its long-term survival in various environments.
The primary hosts for fungi in the Vankya genus are species within the family Cyperaceae (sedges). The fungus colonizes host tissues, often developing within the stem or floral organs.
