Description
The disease is caused by the fungus Vankya ornithogali, a specialized obligate parasite that specifically infects plants of the genus Ornithogalum. This pathogen disrupts the internal biological processes of the host plant, diverting energy towards the production of fungal spores. It is classified within the smut fungi family, known for causing significant structural damage to host tissues.
This fungal infection primarily attacks the vegetative organs of the plants, including foliage and flower stalks. The impact on the plant host is systemic; as the infection progresses, the fungus colonizes the internal tissues, leading to a general decline in the plant's health and vigor. Infected bulbs may fail to bloom or show stunted development over subsequent seasons.
The visual symptoms typically manifest as raised pustules or blisters on the leaves. These structures eventually rupture, releasing masses of dark brown or black teliospores. In addition to these eruptions, the foliage may exhibit chlorosis, curling, and abnormal twisting. If left untreated, the infected plant parts undergo necrosis and eventually wither completely.
The spread of Vankya ornithogali is heavily dependent on moisture and moderate temperatures, which are common during the spring growth phase. Spores are primarily disseminated by wind, splashing rain, or physical contact with contaminated garden tools. Once established, the fungus can survive in the soil or plant debris, acting as a recurring source of infection for new plantings.
Effective management requires a combination of sanitation and preventive practices. Growers should adopt the following measures:
- strictly monitor plants for early signs of pustule formation;
- promptly remove and destroy all infected plant materials;
- ensure good drainage and airflow in the garden;
- avoid overhead irrigation that spreads spores;
- rotate the planting location of bulbs to avoid infected soil.
