Vararia is a genus of fungi within the order Russulales known for causing white rot in woody plant tissues. These fungi possess unique microscopic structures, specifically dichophytic hyphae, which enable them to efficiently break down the structural integrity of wood by degrading lignin and cellulose components.

While these fungi often function as saprotrophs on dead wood, they frequently transition to a parasitic lifestyle, attacking living trees through wounds, pruning cuts, or structural weaknesses where the internal tissues are exposed to colonization.
