Vasculomycosis is a category of plant diseases that specifically target the vascular system, primarily the xylem. The pathogens involved are typically soil-borne fungi such as Fusarium and Verticillium species. These fungi colonize the vascular tissues, creating physical blockages and secreting toxins that disrupt the plant's hydraulic architecture.

This condition affects a wide array of agricultural crops, including tomatoes, potatoes, sunflowers, and various woody ornamentals. It is a particularly destructive disease in greenhouses and fields where monoculture practices increase the accumulation of fungal propagules in the soil profile.

Symptoms often manifest as vascular wilting, where leaves become chlorotic and wilt during the hottest parts of the day, even with sufficient soil moisture. A definitive sign is the dark discoloration of the vascular bundles, which becomes visible when the stem or taproot is cross-sectioned, distinguishing it from superficial rots.

Environmental conditions such as high soil temperatures and fluctuating moisture levels trigger the rapid development of the disease. Furthermore, physical injury to the roots during cultivation provides an easy entry point for the fungus to invade the plant tissue, leading to systemic infection throughout the host.
