The causative agent of the disease is the bacterium Vasculomyces xanthosomae, which specifically targets the vascular system of the host plant. By inhabiting the xylem vessels, the pathogen disrupts the hydraulic integrity of the plant, leading to systemic wilting and eventual decay of the plant tissues.
This disease primarily affects xanthosoma (Xanthosoma sagittifolium), a staple tuber crop in many tropical regions. The infection significantly impacts agricultural productivity by reducing tuber yield and quality, as the bacteria can penetrate deep into the fleshy rhizomes, rendering them unsuitable for consumption or propagation.
Symptoms of the disease initially manifest as marginal chlorosis and subsequent necrosis of the leaves.
