Vaucheria is a genus of yellow-green algae that acts as an opportunistic pathogen in agricultural settings. While primarily aquatic or soil-based, its aggressive growth on cultivation surfaces creates a biological crust that poses a significant threat to crop health by disturbing soil aeration and nutrient uptake.

This organism typically affects greenhouse crops, nurseries, and hydroponic systems. It is particularly damaging to young seedlings and transplants that require consistently moist soil, as the conditions favored by the algae align perfectly with intensive nursery irrigation cycles and high-humidity environments.

The primary symptom is the formation of a dense, dark green or brownish mat on the soil surface or substrate. This layer acts as a physical barrier, restricting oxygen exchange between the roots and the atmosphere. This leads to symptoms such as stunted growth, chlorosis, and in severe cases, the damping-off of young seedlings due to root suffocation.

Development is driven by the trifecta of high moisture, prolonged light exposure, and nutrient-rich substrates. Once a colony is established, it can spread rapidly across cultivation benches. Poor air circulation in greenhouses exacerbates the issue by maintaining high surface humidity, which facilitates the rapid proliferation of algal filaments.

Integrated management strategies are essential to suppress the pathogen:

  • Optimizing irrigation schedules to allow surface drying between watering events.
  • Improving greenhouse ventilation to reduce surface humidity.
  • Using coarse-textured or properly sterilized potting media to enhance drainage.
  • Maintaining optimal lighting intensity to discourage algal photosynthesis on substrates.
  • Applying copper-based algaecides or other chemical controls where necessary.
