Vaucheria dichotoma is a species of yellow-green filamentous algae that often causes significant challenges in aquatic environments and flooded agricultural lands. While technically an alga, its excessive growth in rice paddies is managed similarly to a crop disease due to its ability to suffocate and impede the development of young plants.
The organism acts by forming thick, tangled mats of filaments on the soil surface and in the water column. Unlike parasitic fungi, this algae impacts crops by competing for sunlight, dissolved oxygen, and physical space, ultimately leading to the decay of submerged seedlings.
The primary crop affected is rice, especially during the early stages of establishment after flooding the fields. The algae can also become problematic in ornamental ponds and hydroponic systems. Symptoms include the appearance of dense, bright green or yellowish mats that lift towards the surface, trapping emerging sprouts and preventing proper photosynthesis.
Development is fueled by warm temperatures, stagnant water, and nutrient-rich runoff, particularly phosphorus and nitrogen. In such conditions, the algae reproduce vegetatively at an aggressive rate, quickly covering large portions of the field and creating an environment unsuitable for standard crop growth.
