Vaucheria sessilis is a species of yellow-green algae that can pose a significant nuisance in greenhouse and nursery environments. While it is not a direct pathogen like a fungus, its presence on the soil surface creates conditions that are highly detrimental to the cultivation of young plants and seedlings.

The primary crops affected by this organism are nursery seedlings, lettuce, and potted ornamental plants. It typically thrives in humid settings where substrates remain constantly damp, often colonizing the upper layer of the soil in trays or pots, effectively choking out the emerging root systems.

Symptoms of its presence include the formation of a dark green, filamentous, or felt-like mat on the surface of the soil. As it matures, this mat can dry into a hard, impermeable crust that seals the soil surface, severely inhibiting water infiltration and the essential gas exchange required for healthy root respiration.

Development and spread are favored by prolonged high humidity, excessive irrigation, and low-light conditions within indoor growing facilities. High concentrations of nitrogen and phosphorus in the irrigation water act as stimulants for the rapid colonization of these algae, leading to widespread mats across entire production benches.

The harmful impact of Vaucheria sessilis on crops involves the development of anaerobic conditions at the soil surface, which predisposes plants to secondary infections and root rot. Infected seedlings often show stunted growth, leaf chlorosis, and, in severe cases, total crop loss due to suffocation or pathogen susceptibility.
