Description
Vaucheriales are a group of yellow-green algae that can pose a significant challenge in commercial plant production. While not traditional parasitic fungi, these algae form dense mats on the soil surface, leading to severe physiological stress in plants by sealing the soil surface and preventing gas exchange.
The primary causal agents belong to the genus Vaucheria. These are siphonaceous filamentous algae that thrive in high-moisture environments. Their biology is characterized by rapid vegetative growth, allowing them to colonize bare soil patches in greenhouses and nurseries within a few days under optimal conditions.
Crops affected include seedlings of vegetable crops, ornamental flowers, and container-grown plants. High humidity and high nutrient levels, particularly in substrates with excessive nitrogen and phosphorus, provide an ideal breeding ground for these organisms, often resulting in stunted growth of the host plant.
Symptoms are easily identifiable: a dark green or olive-colored mat appears on the surface of the soil or substrate. As the soil surface dries, this mat forms a hard, parchment-like crust. This crust can cause physical constriction of plant stems and create anaerobic conditions in the root zone.
Control strategies should focus on moisture management and structural improvement of the growing medium. Regular surface cultivation (hoeing) is effective for breaking up the algal crust. Improving greenhouse ventilation and implementing proper drainage systems are critical for preventing the re-establishment of these populations.
