Vavraia is a genus of intracellular parasites belonging to the phylum Microsporidia. In agriculture, these organisms are recognized as vital entomopathogens that infect various insect species, particularly those classified as pests. By targeting these insects, Vavraia serves as a natural regulator of pest populations in agroecosystems.
The causative agent of the disease is a microscopic spore-forming organism. The infection begins when a host insect ingests spores while feeding on contaminated plant tissues. Once inside the host, the parasite invades cells, utilizing the host’s metabolic energy to multiply, which disrupts the normal development of the insect.
The host range includes various species of Lepidoptera and other insect pests that feed on crops. The spread of the pathogen is typically facilitated by the density of the host population; when infected insects congregate, the probability of horizontal transmission through feces and environmental contamination increases significantly.
Symptoms in infected insects often include stunted growth, lethargy, reduced feeding activity, and lowered reproductive rates.
