Description
The causative agent of this disease is the fungus Venturia carpophila (syn. Cladosporium carpophilum). This pathogen is widely known as the primary cause of scab in stone fruits. The fungus survives the winter as dormant mycelium within the lesions on twigs, allowing it to initiate new infections as soon as favorable weather conditions return in the spring.
The disease primarily targets species within the Prunus genus, most notably peaches, nectarines, apricots, and almonds. Cherries and plums can also be susceptible under specific environmental conditions. It is a major concern for commercial fruit growers as it severely impacts both the yield quantity and the aesthetic quality of the fruit.
Symptoms typically manifest on fruits as small, circular, velvety olive-green to black spots. As the infection progresses, these lesions can expand and coalesce, leading to skin cracking and deformation of the fruit. On twigs, the fungus causes brown, scab-like lesions, while on leaves, it may cause chlorotic spotting or shothole symptoms, leading to premature leaf drop.
The development and spread of Venturia carpophila are heavily influenced by environmental factors such as humidity and rainfall. High moisture levels are essential for the germination of conidia and the successful colonization of host tissues. The pathogen spreads rapidly through wind-blown rain and overhead irrigation systems during the growing season.
Effective management strategies require a multi-faceted approach. Key measures include:
- Sanitation: pruning and removing infected twigs and leaf litter.
- Cultural control: improving orchard aeration and pruning to ensure rapid drying of foliage.
- Chemical control: applying protective fungicides during the bloom and early fruit development stages to prevent initial infection.
Without proper monitoring and timely intervention, the disease can cause significant economic losses by making fruits unmarketable. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) practices, including the use of resistant varieties and targeted spraying programs, are the most reliable methods for maintaining orchard health and minimizing the impact of the pathogen.
