While it is primarily regarded as a saprophytic organism rather than a destructive plant pathogen, its presence in agricultural fields or ornamental gardens is a significant indicator of the soil environment's biological activity and moisture levels.
The causative agent of the fungal structure is the mycelium of Verpa digitaliformis, which thrives in substrates rich in decomposing organic matter. Unlike virulent parasites that directly attack living tissues, this fungus plays a role in breaking down lignin and cellulose, which is vital for soil structure but can indicate over-accumulation of debris in intensive cultivation areas.
Symptoms of its presence include the emergence of distinctive thimble-shaped, wrinkled caps during the early spring months.
