Description
Verticillium wilt, caused by the soil-borne fungus Verticillium albo-atrum, is a devastating vascular disease. The pathogen invades the plant through roots and colonizes the xylem vessels, blocking the flow of water and nutrients, which eventually leads to the wilting and death of the plant tissue.
This fungus has a very broad host range, affecting over 300 species of dicotyledonous plants. It poses a significant threat to vegetables such as tomatoes, peppers, and potatoes, as well as strawberries, cotton, sunflowers, and many species of ornamental trees and shrubs.
The primary symptoms often begin as a chlorosis (yellowing) of the lower leaves, which eventually turn necrotic. A key diagnostic feature is the browning or darkening of the vascular tissue inside the stems, which can be observed when cutting the lower part of the stem or root collar of the infected plant.
The fungus thrives in cool to moderate soil temperatures, typically between 20°C and 25°C. It survives in the soil for several years by forming resilient resting structures known as microsclerotia, which can remain viable even in the absence of a host crop, making long-term control extremely challenging.
Management of Verticillium wilt requires an integrated approach. Essential strategies include implementing crop rotation with non-host species, soil solarization or fumigation in controlled environments, maintaining optimal plant nutrition to enhance resistance, and the prompt removal and destruction of infected crop debris to reduce the inoculum level in the soil.
