Description

Verticillium wilt is a destructive vascular disease caused by soil-borne fungi of the genus Verticillium, most notably Verticillium albo-atrum. The pathogen enters plants through the root system and colonizes the xylem, creating blockages that disrupt the upward transport of water and essential minerals throughout the plant vascular structure.

This fungus has a very broad host range, affecting hundreds of plant species including vegetables (tomatoes, peppers, potatoes), orchard crops, berries, and field crops like cotton and sunflowers. The pathogen persists in the soil for many years as dormant microsclerotia, which allow the fungus to survive severe conditions until susceptible plant roots are present.

Typical symptoms often start with wilting and chlorosis of the lower leaves, progressing upwards as the disease develops. The leaves may show V-shaped yellowing or necrotic patterns. A definitive diagnosis is often made by cutting the stem near the base, which reveals characteristic dark brown discoloration of the vascular tissues caused by the presence of the fungal mycelium.

Environmental conditions such as moderate soil temperatures and fluctuating moisture levels trigger the germination of microsclerotia. The pathogen is disseminated through infected soil, contaminated equipment, and propagation materials like seeds or cuttings. Once established in a field, the fungus is notoriously difficult to eradicate due to its long-term survival capabilities.

Managing Verticillium wilt requires an integrated approach because chemical control of soil-borne fungi is often limited. Key prevention measures include:

  • Practicing long-term crop rotation (minimum 4-6 years) with non-host crops.
  • Selecting resistant or tolerant plant varieties.
  • Improving soil drainage and optimizing fertilization to boost plant vigor.
  • Ensuring strict sanitation by removing and burning infected plant debris.
