Description
The causative agent of this devastating disease is the soil-borne fungus Verticillium dahliae, which induces a systemic vascular condition known as Verticillium wilt. The pathogen invades the host through the root system, colonizes the xylem vessels, and physically obstructs water flow while releasing toxins that lead to rapid wilting and necrosis of plant tissues.
The host range of this pathogen is exceptionally broad, affecting over 300 plant species worldwide. Major crops susceptible to Verticillium dahliae include solanaceous vegetables like tomatoes and potatoes, oilseed crops like sunflowers, various stone fruits, and strawberries, causing significant economic disruption in agriculture.
Symptoms typically begin with chlorosis of the lower leaves, often appearing in a characteristic V-shaped pattern. As the fungus disrupts the plant's vascular integrity, the foliage wilts permanently, turns brown, and eventually dies. A hallmark diagnostic feature is the vascular browning visible in the stem tissues when cut crosswise, which differentiates it from other wilt pathogens.
Environmental conditions strongly influence the disease cycle, with soil temperatures between 20°C and 25°C being optimal for fungal infection. The pathogen persists in the soil for many years as resilient microsclerotia, which remain dormant until stimulated by the presence of a susceptible host root system, making long-term control a challenge for farmers.
Effective management strategies rely on a multi-faceted approach to limit the inoculum load in the field. Key protective measures include the implementation of long-term crop rotation schemes, the use of certified resistant or tolerant cultivars, and rigorous field sanitation to remove infected plant debris. In high-value greenhouse crops, soil solarization or chemical fumigation may be necessary to control microsclerotia levels effectively.
