Description
Verticillium tricorpus is a soil-borne fungal pathogen responsible for causing vascular wilt disease in a wide range of economically important crops. Unlike some of its relatives, this species is known for its ability to survive in the soil for extended periods as microsclerotia, making it a persistent and challenging pathogen for farmers globally.
The host range of this fungus is extensive, including major crops such as potatoes, tomatoes, eggplants, and various other vegetables. Once the fungus enters the root system, it colonizes the vascular tissues, specifically the xylem, obstructing the upward movement of water and nutrients, which eventually leads to the wilting and death of the plant.
The primary symptoms of infection typically start with chlorosis (yellowing) of the lower leaves. As the disease progresses, V-shaped necrotic lesions appear on the leaf margins. A definitive diagnostic feature is the browning or darkening of the vascular bundles within the stems, which can be easily observed by slicing the lower stem of a symptomatic plant.
The development and spread of Verticillium tricorpus are favored by moderate soil temperatures and consistent moisture levels. The fungus spreads through the movement of contaminated soil, irrigation water, infected seeds, and the use of unsterilized agricultural equipment. Its saprophytic phase allows it to remain viable in the soil for years, waiting for a susceptible host to be planted.
Management of this disease relies heavily on integrated pest management (IPM) strategies. Essential practices include:
- Implementing long-term crop rotations with non-host species.
- Using certified disease-free seeds and resistant plant cultivars.
- Ensuring proper field sanitation by removing crop debris.
