Description
The Vezdaeaceae family consists of a unique group of lichenized fungi that exist primarily as epiphytes. Within the field of agronomy, these organisms are not categorized as traditional plant pathogens that cause diseases like wilting or rot, but rather as biological structures that colonize the surfaces of tree bark and sometimes leaves in humid environments.
The biological nature of these fungi involves a stable symbiotic relationship between fungal mycelium and algae. They do not penetrate the internal plant tissue; instead, they function as surface settlers. Because they do not rely on the plant's metabolic resources for food, they do not induce necrosis or host cell death, representing a commensal type of relationship.
Various fruit trees and older woody plants serve as the primary substrates for their development. The spread of these organisms is highly dependent on environmental conditions, particularly high atmospheric humidity and lack of air circulation, which prevents the bark surface from drying out and allows the fungi to establish their colonies.
The visual signs of colonization include small, powdery, or scaly patches on the bark, often ranging in color from whitish to pale green. While these growths themselves do not cause structural damage to the plant, their excessive presence can trap moisture and harbor other pathogens or small pests, making the bark surface less hygienic for the tree.
Effective management and prevention strategies revolve around sound orchard practices. Maintaining proper crown density through pruning improves airflow, which is the most critical factor in inhibiting colonization. Additionally, mechanical cleaning of old, loose bark and the application of copper-based preventive treatments during seasonal dormancy are highly effective methods for keeping the plant surface clean.
