Description

Vuilleminia is a genus of fungi belonging to the order Corticiales. The most well-known species, Vuilleminia comedens, is recognized for causing a distinct bark disease in various hardwood tree species. While often classified as a saprotrophic fungus that breaks down dead wood, it acts as a pathogen when infecting stressed or damaged living trees.

The causative agent penetrates the tree through bark injuries, such as frost cracks, wounds from pruning, or mechanical damage. Once inside, the mycelium develops beneath the bark, secreting enzymes that degrade the tissue and force the bark to separate from the wood, which effectively disrupts the tree's nutrient transport system.

This disease primarily affects deciduous trees, including oak, hornbeam, willow, and several species of fruit trees like apple and pear. Trees that are already weakened by environmental stress, drought, or poor soil conditions are significantly more susceptible to successful fungal colonization.

The primary symptom is the distinctive peeling of the bark. Under the peeling sections, one can often find flat, leathery, crust-like fruiting bodies of the fungus, typically varying in color from gray to pinkish. Over time, these infected areas become brittle and dry, leading to the localized death of branches or, in severe cases, the entire tree.

Controlling the spread of Vuilleminia requires a proactive approach centered on orchard hygiene and maintaining tree vigor. The following measures are essential for prevention and protection:

  • Regular pruning to remove any dead, diseased, or damaged branches.
  • Improving air circulation within the canopy to reduce localized humidity.
  • Applying protective wound dressings to large pruning cuts to prevent spore entry.
  • Ensuring trees remain healthy through proper irrigation and balanced fertilization programs.
