Vuilleminia comedens is a pathogenic fungus that causes a specific type of cortical rot in various tree species. As a basidiomycete, it primarily attacks the bark and the underlying cambium layer, leading to the destruction of transport tissues and causing the gradual decline of the host tree’s health.

This fungus predominantly affects deciduous trees, with a strong affinity for oaks, willows, and alders. While it often acts as a parasite on stressed or aging trees, it can also colonize healthy specimens if they have existing wounds or cracks in the bark that allow fungal spores to enter the inner tissues of the plant.

The primary diagnostic symptoms include the cracking and flaking of the bark, which exposes the wood underneath. During the reproductive phase, the fungus produces flat, crust-like fruiting bodies that press closely against the bark surface. These bodies are often flesh-colored, greyish, or yellowish-brown, and their presence indicates that the mycelium has already colonized significant portions of the branch.

The fungal spores are primarily dispersed via wind and rain splash, targeting unprotected wounds caused by frost, pruning, or insect activity. Once the infection is established, the fungal mycelium breaks down the lignin and cellulose, which eventually results in the dieback of branches and limbs.
