The fungus persists in the environment primarily through sexual fruiting bodies, which are highly resilient.
The pathogen primarily affects seeds and emerging seedlings of a broad range of agricultural crops, including various cereals and pulses. By colonizing the seed coat and endosperm, the fungus disrupts the germination process.
