Description

Tan spot, or yellow leaf spot, is a major fungal disease affecting wheat, caused by the pathogen Pyrenophora tritici-repentis. This disease is a significant threat to global grain production, as it leads to severe damage of the leaf canopy and interferes with the plant's natural photosynthetic process, eventually reducing grain yield and quality.

The disease primarily targets wheat crops, including winter and spring varieties, but also frequently impacts winter barley. The fungus survives as mycelium or pseudothecia in infested crop residues left on the soil surface, which serve as the primary source of inoculum when environmental conditions become suitable for infection in the spring.

Symptoms initially manifest as small, tan-colored spots on the leaves, which expand into distinct oval or lens-shaped lesions surrounded by a yellow chlorotic halo. As the disease progresses, these lesions merge, covering large parts of the leaf tissue and causing necrosis, which often leads to the premature senescence of the lower and middle canopy leaves.

Development and spread of the disease are highly dependent on prolonged moisture and moderate temperatures. Rain-splashed spores and wind-borne conidia facilitate the spread of the pathogen within the canopy. Periods of wet weather during the stem elongation and heading stages of crop growth significantly increase the risk of severe infection outbreaks.

Effective management of tan spot requires an integrated approach to break the infection cycle. Key strategies include practicing crop rotation with non-host species, implementing tillage practices to bury crop residues, and applying timely foliar fungicides. Monitoring the field during the critical growth stages is essential to determine the economic threshold and ensure that chemical intervention is timely and cost-effective.
