Description

Cymbidium mosaic virus (CymMV) is a highly infectious plant pathogen belonging to the Potexvirus genus. It is recognized as one of the most economically damaging viruses affecting orchids globally, causing significant physiological stress and permanent aesthetic degradation to infected specimens.

The virus has a broad host range within the Orchidaceae family, with Cattleya, Cymbidium, and Phalaenopsis being particularly susceptible. Once infected, an orchid remains a permanent carrier, as the virus integrates into the plant's vascular system, ensuring lifelong systemic presence.

Clinical symptoms often manifest as chlorotic streaks or mosaic patterns on the leaves. Over time, these may develop into sunken necrotic lesions or blackish blotches. In affected Cattleya plants, the infection frequently results in stunted vegetative growth, flower deformation, and a reduced number of blooms.

Transmission occurs primarily through mechanical vectors. The most common cause of spread is the use of contaminated cutting tools (knives, shears) during pruning, repotting, or propagation. The sap of an infected plant is highly infectious, and even minor wounds allow the virus to move rapidly into healthy tissues.

Management of CymMV is focused entirely on prevention, as there is no chemical cure for viral infections. Key practices include:

  • Sterilizing all tools between different plants using high-heat or chemical disinfectants.
  • Quarantining all newly acquired plants before introducing them to the collection.
  • Periodically testing orchid collections with lateral flow immunoassay kits.
  • Destroying or isolating symptomatic plants to prevent accidental contact spread.
