The disease is caused by the fungus Wojnowicia hirta, a pathogen frequently found on various cereal crops, including wheat and barley. It operates primarily as a hemibiotroph, infecting living plant tissues while also maintaining its presence as a saprophyte on plant debris. This dual nature allows the pathogen to survive harsh conditions and persist in the field environment for several seasons.
The primary symptoms manifest as necrotic spots on the stem bases, leaf sheaths, and occasionally on the spikes. As the disease advances, small black structures known as pycnidia emerge on the surface of the affected tissue. These symptoms often lead to premature yellowing and necrosis of the lower leaves, which significantly interferes with the plant's photosynthetic efficiency and overall growth.
Environmental conditions play a critical role in the development and spread of Wojnowicia hirta. The fungus thrives in humid environments with moderate temperatures. Frequent rainfall and high humidity during the early stages of crop development promote the production of conidia, which spread the infection throughout the canopy. Poorly drained fields or dense crop stands further exacerbate the risk of an outbreak.
The economic impact of the disease is significant, often resulting in reduced grain yield and lower quality parameters. By damaging the vascular tissues of the stem, the fungus restricts the movement of nutrients and water to the developing ear. This leads to lighter grain weight, poor grain filling, and, in severe cases, lodging, which can complicate mechanical harvesting and increase field losses.
Effective management requires an integrated pest management (IPM) approach. Primary preventive measures involve the rotation of susceptible crops with non-host species, efficient incorporation of crop residues into the soil to accelerate decomposition, and the selection of tolerant cultivars. When necessary, chemical control using systemic fungicides during the early vegetative stages is recommended to suppress initial infections and prevent widespread damage.
