Xanthoria is a genus of foliose lichens that often colonizes the bark of trees and shrubs. While not a parasitic disease in the traditional sense, in agronomy, the presence of these organisms is a clear indicator of declining tree health, excessive humidity, or poor orchard maintenance. They exist as a symbiotic relationship between fungi and algae.

This organism frequently affects fruit-bearing trees such as apples, pears, and stone fruits. The primary symptoms include the formation of bright, leaf-like, orange or yellow rosettes on the branches and trunks. As the lichen matures, it can form thick, crusty patches that significantly alter the appearance of the bark.

Development and spread are favored by high atmospheric humidity, lack of sunlight in the canopy, and neglected tree maintenance. Xanthoria thrives in environments where the bark stays damp for long periods. It is rarely found on young, rapidly growing, and healthy bark, preferring the stable, textured surface of mature or stressed trees.

The damage caused by Xanthoria is primarily indirect. It provides a protective microhabitat for various insect pests and fungal pathogen spores to overwinter. Furthermore, by covering the bark, it can impede gas exchange through the lenticels, which reduces the physiological efficiency of the tree's outer tissues and may lead to bark cracking over time.

Effective management begins with mechanical removal using soft brushes during the dormant season. Chemical control includes applying copper-based fungicides or iron sulfate solutions to discourage re-colonization. Long-term prevention relies on proper pruning to improve air circulation and sunlight penetration, ensuring that trees remain vigorous and able to shed old bark naturally.
