Xenopyrenochaetopsis pratorum is a fungal pathogen known to affect various grass species and cereal crops. This fungus is classified as an ascomycete and is primarily responsible for causing foliar spot diseases that can undermine plant health and significantly reduce crop yields in favorable environmental conditions.

The host range of this pathogen is predominantly limited to the Poaceae family. It poses a particular risk to forage grasses in meadows and pastures, as well as several species of cereals. By targeting leaves and sheath tissues, the fungus disrupts the plant's metabolic functions, leading to reduced vigour and potential stunting of the crop.

Symptoms of the disease are characterized by the development of chlorotic spots that eventually transition into necrotic lesions. These spots often display irregular shapes and may be surrounded by a thin, dark margin. Managing this pathogen requires an integrated pest management (IPM) strategy to minimize the inoculum load in the field. Effective control measures should include the following actions:

  • Deep ploughing to incorporate infected residues into the soil.
