Xeromphalina is a genus of fungi within the Mycenaceae family, primarily functioning as a saprotroph in forest ecosystems. In agricultural and forestry contexts, it is identified as an agent of wood decay, responsible for the breakdown of lignin and cellulose in dead or decaying timber. While not typically a primary pathogen of healthy trees, it can colonize weakened specimens.

The causative agent involves basidiomycete fungi that utilize spores to colonize decaying wood substrates. The disease process is characterized by the formation of white or brown rot, leading to the gradual enzymatic decomposition of the wood structure. These fungi are particularly notable in conifer forest environments where they contribute to the carbon cycle by breaking down plant matter.

Symptoms of the infection include the presence of clustered, small, yellow-to-brown fruiting bodies appearing on stumps or tree roots. Internally, the wood becomes brittle, loses its density, and exhibits significant discoloration. The fungus thrives in shaded, poorly ventilated areas where moisture levels in the wood remain consistently high. Spores are dispersed by wind and water, landing on cracks in the bark or exposed areas of the root system to initiate decay.
