Rooting shank (Latin: Xerula radicata, syn. Hymenopellis radicata) is a distinctive fungus species belonging to the Physalacriaceae family. In agronomic and forestry contexts, it is primarily recognized as a wood-decaying saprotroph, though it can become opportunistic in weakened tree species.

The causal agent is the mycelium of this basidiomycete fungus. It thrives by decomposing woody tissues. While it predominantly lives on decaying matter, it often colonizes the roots of deciduous trees, such as beech and oak, potentially causing stress to the host plant when the tree's health is already compromised by environmental factors.

Symptoms of its presence include the growth of tall, slender fruiting bodies rising from the soil, directly connected to subterranean root systems. Internally, the mycelium contributes to the development of white rot within the wood, which can lead to structural instability of the tree and a visible decline in foliage density and canopy health.

Development is favored by high soil moisture, shade, and the presence of existing root wounds. The spread occurs primarily through wind-dispersed spores and the vegetative growth of mycelial strands through the soil. It is commonly found in mature forests and established park landscapes where woody debris is abundant.

The impact of this fungus is mostly related to the accelerated degradation of root structures, which may compromise tree anchorage. Prevention strategies include ensuring proper soil aeration, avoiding physical damage to the root collar, and promoting overall tree vitality through balanced fertilization. In managed areas, removing fruiting bodies before they release spores can help reduce the local fungal load.
