The causal agent is a pyrenomycete fungus that develops complex fruiting structures called stromata. These stromata emerge from the surface of infected beech nuts as distinct, carbonaceous, and often branched or club-shaped bodies. The fungal cycle is finely tuned to the phenology of the host tree, allowing it to rapidly colonize organic matter upon fruit fall.
Typical symptoms of infection include the development of thin, dark, or black fungal outgrowths on the nut husks.
