Xylaria polymorpha, commonly known as Dead Man's Fingers, is a saprotrophic ascomycete fungus that frequently acts as a opportunistic pathogen. It primarily targets the wood of deciduous trees, causing white rot which degrades the structural integrity of the plant by breaking down lignin and cellulose.

Common host trees include beech, oak, maple, and apple trees. The fungus typically invades through wounds in the bark, frost cracks, or improper pruning cuts. While it often colonizes decaying stumps, it can spread to living trees that are stressed, injured, or have reduced natural defenses, leading to eventual structural decline.

The primary diagnostic symptom is the appearance of club-shaped or finger-like fruiting bodies at the base of the tree or on dead wood. These structures are dark brown to black in color, initially covered in white spores, and become very hard as they mature. Internally, the infected wood becomes spongy, discolored, and weak, often leading to mechanical failure.

Development and spread are favored by damp conditions, high humidity, and poor site aeration. The fungal spores are primarily dispersed via wind and rain splash, landing on vulnerable surfaces or soil nearby. Once established, the mycelium spreads slowly through the wood, often remaining hidden until significant internal damage has already occurred.

Management and prevention require a proactive approach to tree health. Key practices include maintaining tree vigor to boost natural defenses, avoiding mechanical damage to roots and trunks, and promptly removing infected wood or old stumps that may harbor the fungus. Professional arboricultural care, including clean pruning and wound management, is essential to mitigate the risk of infection.
